As someone who has undergone micro needling treatments myself, I can attest that there is some pain associated with the procedure, but it is generally tolerable, especially with the use of numbing cream. The level of discomfort also depends on the area being treated and the depth of the microneedling. Here is a detailed look at what to expect and how to minimize pain from microneedling.

Pain Level on Face

Micro needling on the face is one of the most common treatment areas. The face is more sensitive than other parts of the body, so there is some moderate pain associated with microneedling facials. However, I found the pain very tolerable, especially with numbing cream applied 45 minutes beforehand. The needles used are very thin, so you will mostly feel a pinching sensation as they glide over the surface of the skin. Pain levels on the face are usually reported between 2-5 on a scale of 1-10.

Pain Level Without Numbing Cream

If you undergo microneedling without any numbing agent, the pain levels will be significantly higher. On the face, patients report the pain can be anywhere from 5-8 on the 1-10 scale when no numbing cream or injection is used. This level of pain is still bearable for a short treatment, but could become unbearable if performed for an extended period of time. Applying a thick layer of numbing cream or using a numbing injection provides much greater comfort during the procedure.

Pain on Stretch Marks and Other Areas

Stretch marks and body areas like the back, buttocks, arms, and legs tend to be less sensitive than the facial area. As a result, micro needling in these areas causes milder pain, averaging around 2-4 on the pain scale. Again, numbing cream helps ease discomfort. Areas like the stomach and breasts can be moderately painful due to their sensitivity, similar to the face. Bony and extremely sensitive areas like hands and fingers can be the most painful to microneedle without numbing.

Bleeding and Damage

Pinpoint bleeding is common during microneedling. However, significant bleeding is rare and could indicate potential damage from overly aggressive treatment. Properly performed micro needling should not cause excessive bleeding or long term damage. Only mild redness and pinpoint bleeding that subsides within a day is expected. Signs of damage like bruising, oozing, scabbing, and scarring mean the needles went too deep. Seek medical attention if you have concerns about bleeding or injury after your procedure. Always go to licensed, experienced professionals.

Pain Compared to Lasers

Laser skin resurfacing is considered significantly more painful than micro needling. Lasers work by creating heat damage to the skin, which can cause intense pain, burning and stinging sensations. Microneedling does not generate heat or damage the skin in the same manner, and patients generally tolerate it much better in terms of discomfort. However, everyone has a different pain tolerance. If you are concerned about pain, ask your provider about possible numbing agents for either procedure.

Is It Worth the Discomfort?

While microneedling does cause some degree of discomfort for most patients, the vast majority find the results to be well worth it. The mild pinching and poking sensations only last for the duration of the actual treatment. And for areas like stretch marks and scars, the outcomes can be life-changing. The collagen and elastin stimulation from the micro injuries leads to dramatic improvement in skin texture, tone, and appearance over the course of several sessions. Just be sure to have the procedure performed by an experienced medical professional to maximize results and minimize any risks. Use of numbing cream is highly recommended as well.

How to Minimize Pain

Here are some tips to help reduce pain and discomfort during your microneedling treatment:

· Apply numbing cream or gel to the treatment area about 45 minutes beforehand. This will numb the top layers of skin significantly.

· Take over-the-counter pain medication an hour before the procedure. Ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help reduce sensitivity.

· Use a cold pack on the area right before to numb the skin.

· Ask your provider about using a numbing injection for maximum pain relief.

· Start with a shorter, more superficial session for your first treatment.

· Distract yourself with music, conversation, or your phone during the procedure.

· Apply a soothing aloe vera gel afterwards to calm any residual irritation.

· Avoid alcohol and blood thinners for 24 hours pre and post-treatment to reduce bleeding.

Conclusion

While microneedling does involve some degree of pain and pinpoint bleeding, it is very tolerable, especially with the use of anesthetic numbing cream. The discomfort is temporary and most patients find the results to be well worth it. Take the proper precautions, communicate with your provider, and the procedure can be virtually painless. With dramatic improvements in skin texture, tone, scars, and stretch marks, micro needling is an effective way to resurface the skin without excessive pain or downtime. Just be sure to have it performed properly by a licensed medical professional. Follow the aftercare instructions, and you will be on your way to more beautiful, youthful looking skin.
